Benefits of Belonging

Make your teaching easier, more productive, more rewarding and more fun for your students. Evidence from sound educational research shows that professional growth happens because teachers seek ways to make existing practices better. Research-based classroom learning and assessment strategies will enhance your teaching effectiveness and result in improved student learning.

AAC practices are consistent with one of the recommendations of Alberta's Commission on Learning (October 2003): Ensure that all teachers have access to high quality, performance-based and cutting edge classroom assessment materials and practices.

A modest change in classroom teaching, learning and assessment practices brings positive results to those who have applied sound principles advocated by the AAC and participated in its professional activities. These testimonials speak for themselves.

AAC works with the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA), Alberta universities and colleges, Alberta Learning, the Alberta Regional Professional Development Consortia (ARC), and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) to improve student assessment. In Alberta, 80% of jurisdictions are members of AAC, giving Alberta teachers access to specialized resources and support.

AAC support includes:

  • A resource library, and five professional publications reflecting the latest research in assessment and communication practices.
  • Ongoing professional development, including conferences and workshops.
  • Individual consultation in assessment matters.
  • Teacher-developed performance assessments, rubrics and exemplars available on our web site - www.aac.ab.ca.
  • Contributing teachers recognized and compensated.

AAC wants to be your learning partner in your jurisdiction, school and classroom.

Together we make teaching enjoyable and rewarding.

As students recognize that they own the criteria and understand what the expectations are, they can't help but become engaged in their learning. The teacher's job becomes so much easier now - no more repeating instructions and trying to "pull" from the children what you are expecting to see.

Lisa, teacher

We know our students are much more successful learners than ever before. They talk like learners - they know that they have learning objectives and they expect to provide evidence for their learning…student achievement on provincial achievement tests in our school has increased dramatically since we implemented our plan. We are proud of student learning in our school.

Margaret, principal

By asking my own questions and acquiring the knowledge to answer these questions, I have learned more about the subject than I would have if I had just accepted the given reason and never questioned. I have been taught and encouraged to actually learn for myself rather than to learn for a grade.

Kristin, student

I am so pleased with the improvement in (my son's) work this year. The rubrics that he is using in your class are tremendously helpful. He has a much better idea of what he needs to do to improve his writing and how to do it. He is actually enjoying writing this year, and I enjoy not having to be on his back about his writing assignments!

  • "Excellent opportunity to develop assessment projects and rubrics with 'expert' advice and assistance."
