Unit Assessment Planning – An Informational Walkthrough

Teachers are master planners! Traditionally, planning has been focused on developing units and lessons for instruction, with assessment added on at the end.

In the spirit of backward design, planning for assessment is the essence of the planning process, with instruction following in service to the assessment goals. This process results in a well designed blueprint for student success, focusing on the evidence that is required to determine that learning has occurred and planning for instruction and scaffolding to support students along the way.

Unit assessment plans in grades 6, 7, 8, and 9 social studies, model how to anchor a unit with performance assessment and then how to design instruction and formative assessment backwards from the end goal. The unit assessment plans reside on the AAC website under the Assessment Materials tab. This webinar provides a walkthrough of the key elements of these assessment plans and highlights additional support provided by AAC.

This webinar was developed by the Alberta Assessment Consortium (AAC) in partnership with the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium (ERLC) as a result of a grant from Alberta Education to support implementation. The unit assessment plans were developed by AAC in partnership with the Southern Alberta Professional Development Consortium (SAPDC).
